Recipe Inspiration

One of my favorite restaurants in Cedar Rapids was known as “the Greek Place”. My. favorite things to order were Pastitsio or Chicken ala Grecque, both of which were served with a dinner salad covered in the most amazing creamy Greek dressing!

After the restaurant closed down several years ago, I knew that I had to recreate this tangy Greek salad dressing with feta to serve at home. I am so happy that my Greek style feta dressing tastes absolutely amazing and is incredibly simple to prepare!!

What is Feta cheese?

Feta is a soft, brined cheese with a grainy texture and a salty flavor. It is commonly formed into blocks, but can usually only be found crumbled in the grocery store.

In Greece, Feta Cheese is made with sheep’s milk or a mixture of sheep and goat’s milk. In the United States, it is made with cow’s milk. I have no idea why. It is probably cheaper to make it that way.

Feta is an aged cheese, so this dressing has never upset my stomach… <insert happy dance>! Not that I would have cared, I really love this dressing. It is thick and creamy just like my other favorite, Homemade Ranch Dressing. I guess you could call it Mediterranean Ranch!

How do you make Creamy Greek Feta Dressing?

The process of making creamy feta dressing involves blending or whisking the ingredients together until they are well combined and the dressing reaches a smooth and creamy consistency.

Place the feta cheese, milk, and vinegar in a bowl, and mash together to break apart any large chunks.

Add the yogurt, mayonnaise, finely minced garlic, finely chopped green onions, dill, oregano, and black pepper. Whisk together until well combined.

For a smoother dressing, place all ingredients into a food processor and mixed together until well blended and creamy.

Once prepared, creamy feta dressing can be served immediately or refrigerated in an airtight container for a short period (up to four days) to allow the tangy flavors to meld together.

It pairs exceptionally well with a variety of salads, including Mediterranean salad, Greek salad with kalamata olives, red onions, and cherry tomatoes, or a simple tossed greens salad.

It can also be used as a feta dip for raw vegetables, a sauce for grilled meats or roasted vegetables, or even as a spread for sandwiches or wraps.

Recipe Modifications

  • Substitute sour cream for the Greek yogurt.
  • Red wine vinegar for the white balsamic which is sometimes harder to find.
  • Replace the vinegar with fresh lemon juice.
  • If possible, use fresh herbs instead of dried for more vibrant flavors.

    YUMMY!
I’ve made many dressings using recipes from here and there as well as adding my own touch as I did with this tasty dressing recipe. I used a high grade white lemon balsamic. I didn’t have fresh green onions on hand so I used about 1 tsp dried chives. Lastly, no milk- no worries because I always have cream around for my coffee. I will be adding this to my favs.
